Agreed. I was surprised more people didn't agree at the time. Even if he lost the fight, he should have made the Republicans own it. That may be the biggest difference between President Obama and President Trump. The former actually cared about respecting the system. The latter has been shitting all over it since he was elected.

This is why the House and the Senate should be required to vote on everything. Get rid of the role of gatekeeper. It is not a necessary function.

These people were elected to vote on things.

    Roll the dice.

Just getting a vote on something, regardless of its outcome, should not be considered a victory (I don't see how it would, but apparently it is).

McConnell couldn't even let Obama say "Hey, at least Garland got a vote."

How would that have been a victory for Obama?

Since 1789, 99 percent of the work-related energy (fundraising excluded of the US Congress has gone to avoiding having to take votes on anything. It takes burning-at-the-stake pressure from the public to get that body to do anything at all, let alone address controversial issues. That's why there's the filibuster. The avoidance of responsibility is the prime directive of the legislature.

Obama should have just said that unless there’s a negative vote, he would assume the Senate’s advice and consent was an approval for Garland until there was a vote disproving otherwise.
