Well, it’s more tied to the abortion aspect of the issue, but I agree with you otherwise.

 

In what way would it be established as a check and/or balance on the President's power if it the President does not suffer any consequences as a result of it? Trump would act as if impeachment was nothing more than partisan censure, and so it would become. Next Democratic president, and Republican majority house, the Republicans would vote to impeach, and their base and feckless leadership would say nothing, and on it would go. I'm not saying grounds for impeachment should be relative to the political environment, but if you are going to impeach, you better be damn sure you've got the goods. Like it or not, the special counsel's report did not lay out an unequivocal case for impeachment.

There's a reason Trump is trying to goad the Dems into impeaching.

Mueller report contained more than enough evidence for multiple grounds for impeachment. Both Nixon (refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas) and Clinton (encouraging public officials to lie to the public) were impeached on grounds that Trump is doing right now. My personal opinion is that views of Trump are so set in stone that impeaching him will have little real political impact in terms of the 2020 election. But to say there's no case is absurd.
