Was at a church dinner party a couple of weeks ago and talking to a former DOJ civil rights attorney (now long in private practice). White-haired, dour, gravelly voice -- me in every way but the voice. He was talking about being pretty much fresh out of law school and assigned to prosecute one of the big, ugly civil rights cases in the deep South in the early '60s. He had several FBI agents who told him they'd actually witnessed the crime, so he felt pretty good about his chances ... until he was told "through channels" that it was J. Edgar's understanding that these guys hadn't seen anything.
