President Trump: The NEW one and only politics thread

Those sorts of attitudes might be more prevalent to the South, but can be found in other regions and outdoor activities. My grandparents built a cabin in south central Colorado in 1939. My parents built one next to it in 1976. These are simple dwellings with wood heat, basic electricity and individual rudimentary water systems that pull water from a creek. I have visited there all my life and hiked the trails, sometimes as backpacking ranger with a nearby Boy Scout camp.

In about the past decade, the number of ATVs has jumped and the forest service is fighting a seemingly losing battle to keep them out of the surrounding wilderness area where even bicycles are not allowed.

Folks with pistols (almost always semiautos) on their hip are becoming more common outside of hunting season. Deer season has become a bizarre form of mechanized warfare. Longtime, more traditional, hunters have moved deeper into the forest to avoid the spectacle.

More and more folks, even those who have no interest in hunting, seem to foster the idea that they are there to somehow battle and conquer nature instead of just being immersed in it.

Several decades ago, I was a bit chapped when I found a McDonald’s bag on a remote Jeep road. This year, I found a marijuana gummy wrapper on one of my favorite trails.

I’m fully aware that I’m becoming one of those geezers who shake a fist and holler, “You kids stay the hell outta my mountain meadow!” And I’ve come to appreciate the macho T-shirts and truck window decals that brag about guns or ‘Merica! because they tag folks whom I should do my best to avoid.

 

Obviously, it won’t happen, but I would love it if Schiff said, “OK, all liars must resign. So I’ll resign as long as you resign too, Mr. President. Deal?”

Never heard of that website before. Don't know if I've ever been quite so capitivated by an "About Us" introduction.

I do think the paramilitary stuff has more to do with marketing than anything. You can't sell simpliciity. But bigger scopes, ATVs, new camo designs - 90 percent of marketing is convincing people they aren't "good enough" until they buy your product. I imagine a lot of blue collar/rural types feel that in their bones already, the way they are portrayed in pop culture (even the stuff that glamourizes the lifestyle) compared to the rest of society.

Our little slice of the Ozarks is overrun with folks driving side-by-sides all over the damn place. The forest service has cut trails for them and built parking lots and restrooms at the trailheads. Great! It's awesome more people are out enjoying public land. But part of our property abuts the National Forest and they use the roads - loosely classified as that, more like doubletrack dirt paths - as much as the trails. Last weekend, I rounded a corner to find a group of more than 20 side-by-sides puttering slowly up the road. You'd think they'd yield the road to somebody driving faster than them. But, no, of course not.

One of the best deer stands we had sat about 100 yards off an ancient road leading to another homestead and, eventually, looping back to an ATV trailhead. You'd sit with your back to the road and deer would funnel down off the hilltop en route to a field across the road. With the incessant ATV traffic, that stand is ruined early in the season. The pattern of deer movement is disrupted by groups of ATVs cruising along - or worse, the solo driver out trying to set a land-speed record.

Luckily, we've got enough acreage to move deeper into the hills and hollows. But now, instead of it being quiet enough to hear a chipmunk collecting acorns or a jet passing over at altitude, we hear the buzzing of the ATVs while we're sitting deep in the woods.
