The argument I raised against Thunberg? I'm just calling it what I think it is. The kid to her credit even admits she doesn't really know the science. Her role is almost exclusively as appointed moral clarion. it's not about any particular policy change with her. It's the sense of alarm.

If you're saying "that's how it works, that's how it's always worked," then I assume you agree with me she's being leveraged in that way.

I don't think you understand Thunberg's history or perspective as well as you think you do.

She does understand the science, or at least the nuts and bolts of it. She tried showing her parents data and science to get them to change some habits, but it took an emotional appeal to get them started on things like Veganism. Her activism built from there. You keep implying that she's being used a bit, that she's being trotted out there by some larger organization when the reality is this has been a predominantly organic campaign on her part that literally started with her outside of a school, by herself, with a simple sign.

Finally, the data has been around for years. It continues to get bleaker and bleaker. Yet nothing has changed.

She saw firsthand that the data route wasn't working. Emotional and moral appeal is all that was left.

 

Rosa Parks was an activist and organizer for the NAACP in Montgomery - and sure, maybe getting arrested and thrown off the bus was a stunt. Didn't mean she wasn't tired after a long day of work - it also was a strong narrative that finally took root.
Thunberg is a kid who other kids responded to - and it is a great story since the kids of today are the ones who will have to deal with climate change.
AIDS was around for years before Rock Hudson and Magic Johnson contracted HIV - suddenly everyone "knew" someone dealing with AIDS and it made a difference. Even that kid Ryan White who died from a blood transfusion showed dismissing AIDS as a gay disease was dumb and made the disease more the focus than the lifestyles of the previous thousands of people who died from it.

She has leveraged her political beliefs for billions of free advertising and PR and sponsorships from international businesses. She has gone from a little girl with a climate change booth at the local school science fair to be as famous as Bono. She did it in less than 2 years and she’s brought a spotlight to an honest policy belief. She’s the Mozart of political activism. Who’s using who?
