I think they believed that because Trump as an elected leader was a blank slate. People just couldn't believe that he'd be as absurd in office as he was as a candidate. Surely, they presumed, he won't Tweet. Surely the GOP will surround him with competent advisors and he'll listen because he doesn't want to be humiliated. This campaign schtick was an act. Remember when many presumed there would be pushback from elected Republicans if Trump went too far? I hoped that would be the case. The most amazing and disturbing thing about these past three years has not been Trump; it has been the willingness of his party to become his klan. Without that unwavering support, we would't be as bad off as we are now.

.....when people (both voters and pundits) believed that Trump wouldn't focus on a typical GOP agenda of tax cuts and de-regulation and would push for infrastructure?
......when people believed he'd revitalize rust belt areas like Youngstown?
......when Trump's alleged wealth meant he couldn't be bribed?
.......when Trump would somehow regain global American prestige that had allegedly disappeared between 2009 and 2017?
......when people were seriously discussing Trump for a Nobel Prize?
.......when people argued he'd greatly decrease drone strikes?
