I’m a hardcore liberal, and I could vote for Larry hogan (Republican governor of Maryland) he was just on morning joe. Of course he has no chance nationally with the current Republican Party. But Democrats and republicans need to be more like him if our politics is ever going to be fixed.
He has a book out, I need to get it.

"Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu announced that he wouldn’t attend a rally on Saturday in Portsmouth, though he’ll greet Trump on arrival to the state. He, too, blamed the coronavirus.

“I will not be in the crowd of thousands of people, I’m not going to put myself in the middle of a crowd of thousands of people, if that’s your question specifically,” he told CNN. “I try to—unfortunately, you know, I have to be extra cautious as the governor, I try to be extra cautious for myself, my family.”

This is an implicit rebuke of Trump’s cavalier attitude toward the coronavirus, if a timid one. But not long ago, it would have seemed absurd for any sitting Republican governor to avoid a rally with Trump—especially a governor up for reelection. But Sununu, like the senators, probably just doesn’t need to worry about Trump right now."

Larry Hogan appeals to the Kasich wing of the Republican party. Kasich consistently received about 15% of primary votes. I don't think Hogan would do better.

Good Lord. When I was a kid Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon meant last day of summer vacation.

There weren't any megaphones. Just party-line telephones. And there was whining. By everyone.

Sound familiar to sheltering and masks today?

Sound familiar? Putting the economy in a (midterm) election year over "national interests."

Sound familiar? "We live differently here, so we should not have to abide by the same rules!"

America wanted nothing to do with the war and FDR basically duped the American people into doing what was right. People like to think we grabbed a flag with one had and a gun with another and raced in to fight Germany screaming yee-ha, but that wasn’t the case.

We have always had self-centered fringe in America.

Not sure it’s a fringe. Maybe not a majority but a sizable fraction. There’s no majority in America.

The reason Chrysler converted its operations to building tanks and Ford to bombers wasn't out of patriotism. It was because the government was compelled to offer “cost-plus” contracts that guaranteed defense manufacturers a profit, no matter how efficient their production.

The Japanese attacked us. So the U.S. declared war. It was an open question if we would go to war in Europe right after Pearl Harbor but Hitler declared war on the United States a week later.

It is hard for me to see how FDR, who was admittedly duplicitous, tricked the country into WWII.

Federal money makes up a relatively small percentage of the funding for schools. States and individual districts can say no. There is the potential for school districts to safe some money if they are virtual or at least not open every day. That would help the individual districts make up some of the difference if he actually goes through with his threat.

On the other hand, states and schools should be insisting on more federal aid if they are going to open full time because that is going to be costly. They need to make a very big point of the Republicans paying lip service to the importance of opening schools, but dragging their heels on providing the additional funding necessary to do it safely. Mitch McConnell seems to be finally coming around on this, but he held up the process for two months. It was the Democrats in Congress who saw the need and passed a relief bill in the house in mid-May and McConnell went on record mocking them and saying he wasn't sure there was a need for another relief bill. He's trying to take credit for wanting to pass one now. It is vitally important that Democrats don't let him.
