This was in 2000 as well. I don't know when the majority of such laws were put into place. My state does indeed allow such denials of coverage, so he is dead right. We were fortunate not to have to file bankruptcy over it.

Lots of health care gets paid for by automotive insurers.

Fixing the ACA is neither here nor there. You can't "fix" fundamentally bad policy like the ACA (which, admittedly, was foisted upon a hot steaming pile of decades of bad policy).

Enact a drawn-out (say, 5- or 10-year) schedule in which the deductibility of health insurance goes from 100% to, say, 10%. Let health insurance become insurance ... a means of protecting against catastrophic events.

The Number One way to protect against catastrophic events is to have regular preventive health care. High blood pressure and a heart attack aren't unrelated.

The right wing screech machine now in the saddle does not believe government works, they don't believe government will work, they don't think it can work, they don't think it should work, and they'll do everything in their power to make sure it does NOT work.

Even better, they want everything and anything associated in any way with the mooslim neegro to be synonymous in the public mind with the most absolutely fucking diastrous fiasco ever, and they are hell bent to make sure it happens.

So explaining to any of the right wingers, "We have to do xxxxxxxxx with Obamacare to make sure the maximum number of people get adequate coverage and therefore do not suffer and die," is a complete fucking waste of time; people suffering and dying is a big win win for them, as long as they can hang it on the mooslim neegro.

Actually, the evidence on that -- preventive care saves money -- is pretty sketchy (you may be aware of this).

I've seen that and I think it's something that's caught in the political maw and thus somewhat unknowable. You know those statisticians. (Except OOP. He breaks it down truth-like.)

But take, for instance, the population that's on medication for high cholesterol. They're living longer and better. How many of those folks don't get themselves on the medication if it's an added line-item expense instead of part of the overall package? The surgery and hospital stay cost a hell of a lot more than the daily drugs, and that's not even taking into account that preventing death is kind of a good thing.

They can't though. They ran on repeal and replace. People (including some Republican Congressmen) have looked around and realized that millions of people are depending on this coverage. They can repeal it easily enough, but have nothing better to put in it's place. Any alterations made now, particularly for the worse, are wholly Republican owned no matter how much double-talk Trump spews.

I hate to be the bearer ... statins have, at best, a trivial effect on life expectancy (perhaps a matter of one day per year you've taken them). The numbers simply aren't there for your broader argument.

Think preventive medicine will save money? Think again

And because many GOP Congressmen won by taking brilliant advantage of an incredibly stupid electorate that didn't know Obamacare, which they professed to hate, and the ACA, which they seemed to like, were the same thing.
Convincing stupid people to vote against their economic self-interest has been a winning strategy for quite some time.

It's gotta bum you out, sharing this planet with so many people who aren't nearly as ... clued in ... as you.
