I don't like the way this is shaping up. I'm not a doctor , but this is scary in a long-term way.

But the guy down the street got drunk, and beat his kids and wife. At least we have Ragu's "smoking doesn't hurt anyone except the smoker" opinion.

I think that the debate about whether alcohol is a net positive or benefit is a reasonable one to have.

I'm just responding to the assertion that there is absolutely zero benefit that comes from it. That's not the case.

Not necessarily. He's a Congressman. He's in a suburb of Washington, D.C., and a victim of a mass shooting. They'll have gotten him onto an operating table damn fast, and the odds are that he got top notch care from the best staff that they had available. A wound like that always has the potential for complications, but it's not like a field medic patched him up and he was going to take an hour to get to field grade surgery and then be evacuated to Germany to get it done dead right. Odds are that he'll heal pretty well... but understand that I'm talking in a general sense and know no details whatsoever. For instance it is entirely possible that he'll be wearing a colostomy bag for a couple of months while his intestines heal.

That's like a lot of things. It depends on how it is used. A cold beer after cutting the grass or while watching the game is one thing, a twelve pack every night and a case a day on weekends is quite another.

Understood. Public policy isn't pretty. That why most of it is so ineffective.

You can debate all day long whether something is "beneficial." It's wasted energy. An activity or a product or whatever will have varying degrees of utility to various people. What one person finds absolutely useless, another person may find very enjoyable. Both are legit, because we all value things differently. That is what makes us individuals.

In the context of that gun conversation, the question isn't whether owning a gun has value to anyone. It's about whether the harm caused by some people having guns, to OTHERS, is a compelling reason to limit access to guns.

That is the basis for our system of laws. You are free to pursue whatever makes YOU happy. ... As long as that pursuit doesn't infringe on others. And when you look at all of the gun violence, and the harm some people with their guns keep causing others, it is legitimate to say, "We need to outlaw those things."

This is surprising coming from you. Sounds like socialism. Take away rights to benefit the whole.
