I, and I'm far from alone here, would be happy if 99 percent of all politicians shut the fuck up and went away.

From Mitt Romney (as if there's been a groundswell of support for him to resurface) to Hillary Clinton. From Mitch McConnell to Elizabeth Warren.

Fuck 'em.

 

We have to have politicians in a representative democracy. We can't make them shut up and go away. It takes super guts to run for office and be exposed to the contempt of an apathetic public that is convinced it's morally superior to you because it ignores self-governance as a principle. I respect even the pols whose policies I despise for that courage.

Maybe they wouldn't be so despised if they lubed up every once in a while before fucking us all in the ass.

And, by the way, I can't "make" Hillary go away, either. But let's stop pretending she's the only politician people hate.

 

Yes, like the Senate Majority Leader, "representing" one of the nation's poorest states, championing a health bill that likely will harm a great many people in his state.

 

These are ELECTED officials. Martians didn't put 'em there, voters did. Your quarrel is with your fellow citizens.

 

If this kind of shit went on in any other country . . . we'd use it as a basis for invasion.

 

The state of Kentucky is not gerrymandered, it's just a state, where incidentally McConnell is not very popular, but he ran his last two races when the rest of the country had the temerity to nominate, then elect and re-elect, a black man as President, so he won both times. That's on Kentuckians. If their racial identity and fears mean more to them than their economic self-interest, horrible shits like McConnell will thrive. It's possible next time he runs, that won't be the case. People have to change for politicians to change.

 

Perhaps our resident Putinista can explain how a Senate election can be gerrymandered. Have state borders changed recently?

 

They were two different posts representing two different points. That happened to be mentioned in consecutive posts (and thus were incorrectly interpreted to be linked).

Point 1: McConnell does not represent his constituency well (in response to McGee's point that we live in a "representative" democracy).

Point 2: Gerrymandering House districts is a major problem in a so-called democracy (in response to McGee's post that Martians didn't put these guys in power).

And finally, a female would be called a Putinista (or more likely, a Putinitsa), a male a Putinist (or more likely, a Putinik).

 

Yes, partly, but we're also free to quarrel with scumbag politicians who get elected by appealing to and manipulating their voters' basest instincts.
