My 5-year-old brings home assignments all the time with adorably misspelled words, and it's just about my favorite thing in the world. My teacher wife tells me that's in line with best practices at that age - don't make them get bogged down in spelling, let them focus on learning to read, write legibly and express themselves - and I imagine your teacher wife would say the same thing. But man, it makes my heart melt every time he brings home an assignment describing the texture of popcorn as RUF or BUMPE.

Went downtown for some Christmas thing last weekend. My son is standing with me as I put money in for parking. I'm waiting for the ticket to print out and a car alarm goes off. My son instantly yells "Mother fucker!" The two women with a little boy behind me looked mortified. Despite my best effort, I couldn't help but grin.
