That's totally possible. But he can claim it. Politics is the art of appearances.

The thing about Truman in '48, he had a bit of a tussle even being renominated. He didn't have any money ... they actually were passing the hat a couple of times to get the train out of the station. No one ... and I mean NO ONE ... thought he had even a puncher's chance.

I know that the polling indicated that the race was close, but I'm genuinely shocked at this result. It stuns me that voters in a deep red, Deep South state were this malleable. I know a lot of us chide the GOP and Alabama about "voting for a child molester," but it was my impression that in polarized America, where everyone is quarantined from inconvenient news, that there would basically be no way to convince enough voters that the Washington Post's reporting was legitimate to be able to turn an election in this way. I'm stunned.

Actually, the best part was watching so many Republicans show just how low they are willing to go to put party before the good of the country and still lose.

Jonathan Martin of the Times made a good point. Moore wasn't very popular in Alabama even before the Post's story. He's been around state politics a long time. The Republicans who crossed over or stayed home only needed a nudge and they got a hearty shove instead.

Trump wins because minority turnout doesn't show up: Let's talk about how important white people are and do lots of specials and profiles on them and what they think.

Jones wins because minority turnout *does* show up: Let's talk about how important white people are for not showing up.

Were there any other races on the ballot anywhere in the state?

If not, it’s pretty wild that 22,000 folks came out to vote for a write-in candidate in the only race on the ballot, when staying home would have accomplished the same thing.

I guess a fair number of people really wanted to send a message.

You're right. I think Shelby saying that's what he did inspired a good number of those 22,000. They want a more normal state where they can be more normal Republicans.

What sending a message might sound like.

Hi, this is President Donald Trump and I need Alabama to go vote for Roy Moore. It is so important. We are already making America great again. I'm going to make America safer and stronger and better than ever before. But we need that seat. We need Roy voting for us. I'm stopping illegal immigration and crime. We're building a stronger military and protecting the Second Amendment and our pro-life values.

But if Alabama elects liberal Democrat Doug Jones, all of our progress will be stopped cold. We already know Democrat Doug Jones is a puppet of Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and he will vote with Washington liberals every single time. Democrat Jones is soft on crime, weak on immigration, supports abortion. He's bad for our military and bad for our vets. We don't want him and he also, by the way, wants higher taxes.

Roy Moore is the guy we need to pass our Make America Great Again agenda. Roy is a conservative who will help me steer this country back on track after eight years of the Obama disaster. Get out and vote for Roy Moore. His vote is our Republican Senate and it's needed. We need Roy to help us with the Republican Senate. We will win and we will make America great again.
