President Trump: The NEW one and only politics thread

That’s not how it happened.

Republicans pushed for it. Dems resisted, but eventually relented. Obama signed it when it reached his desk.

Put forward by House Republicans, the troop-pay bill is considered good politics for the GOP, since analysts suggest the party could bear the brunt of the blame for any government disruption.

It’s all just another variation of “the fact that we were being investigated is proof that the whole legal system is out to get us so don’t believe the results of the investigation.” Same old covering for criminals shamelessness.

 

Lindsey Graham and Dick Durbin agreeing to something doesn’t mean there is a bi-partisan bill. What they proposed would not have gotten through the House or the Senate.

Excellent job! That's an even stronger word than До свида́ния (until we meet again). Прощай has come to mean "Goodbye forever!"

 

Then why not put it to a vote and find out? Because, of course, it would have passed. Then Trump would have vetoed it or signed it depending on the phases of the moon and whether Fox and Friends was on and the issue would either be over or moved to the voters, with the Republicans denied their chance to blame somebody else.

 

It wasn't just them but a Gang of Six with three from each party, but you know that. And if Trump had supported it, it would indeed have gotten through the House and Senate. GOP members want Trump cover if they vote for DACA, but they can't get it because he keeps going back on his word, and not even he knows what he wants from minute to minute because he has no fixed principles. That's why Mitch McConnell said explicitly (paraphrasing): "We need the President to tell us what he would be willing to sign." The GOP can't trust Trump any more than the Dems, or anyone else for that matter. That's not the only problem, but in this particular instance it's the single biggest one.

Also I suspect it would get through the House and Senate now in its current state, or with relatively minor tweaks. But McConnell and Ryan won't allow it to be voted on. You know the last sentence is true, too.

At least Republicans are finally acknowledging that being in the country without permission is not, at the moment, a crime.
