But, Delta’s Atlanta hub is huge. You’d need a huge airport to support something like that, and you’d need a ton of O&D (origination and destination) traffic to support it. A hub can’t exist solely on connecting traffic.

Today’s hubs are mega hubs, for mega airlines. You can’t just turn St. Louis (former TWA) or Indianapolis (ATA) into a Delta hub to replace Atlanta.

This sure reads to me like you're saying Delta's hub in Atlanta is too big to move. If all you're saying is that it can move, but it would be difficult to move, we agree. But that's not how this reads.

But I really have avoided any claims of expertise.

 

With the caveat I’m not an expert, these don’t seem at all analogous. Moving a bunch of people sitting in cubicles seems relatively simple compared to moving a hub. Finding generic corporate office space seems a lot easier than finding an airport with sufficient landing gates—not to mention the regulatory hassle that comes with it. Then even after you found an appropriate site you’d have to re-route all your flights, although I assume software can be great help with the logistics.

But, yes, I suppose you are probably literally right it wouldn’t be impossible to move a hub. What exactly the point of proving that is I don’t know.

 

I stand by everything I wrote there.

Delta could abandon their Atlanta hub, and open one up in Pittsburgh.

And, they might literally go bankrupt as a result.

So, yes, I suppose they could do it.
