At first glance it looked like Terence Trent D'Arby was a Trump fan back in the day.

Then you rewind and see that it reads TRIUMPH

Capitalism is the only economic system that is compatible with democracy. It's also the only moral economic system there is.

Putting aside that story first (which I skimmed), we have had decades of creeping socialism, corruption under the guise of "regulating" capitalism and major chunks of our economy being run as a command economy.

I can't stand those types of headlines. We have slowly destroyed capitalism in everything except name. With economic decisions, prices of nearly everything (including interest rates, the most important price in capitalism; but add in the markets for housing, health care, education, and a host of other things all having been subverted) being administered for people, rather than allowing free-market capitalism to work.

And when that hodge podge of corruption and misguided do-goodism leads to really bad economic consequences for a lot of people. ... there are those who turn around and blame capitalism. When it's all of the ANTI-capitalist, command-economy decisions that have become the norm, which have hurt us. Historically, it's also, wash, rinse, repeat.

As for the article itself, digging out Karl Polyanyi in 2018 made me smile. I could break my record for a post on him. But read The Great Transformation if you ever have a chance. This is a simplification, but the basic idea is that tribal / caste societies are wonderful because nobody starves! Who cares if everyone lives at a subsistence level and is a slave to their environment?

I always found those kinds of ideas nonsensical. He basically pines for a time of no innovation, in which standards of living didn't move, life was harsh and short (but everyone shared what little they had -- hey, at least we can starve together, equally), there was often famine (no trade, so if there is a bad crop, oh well),rampant disease and plague, etc.

Even if you buy that nonsense. ... it defies rationality and human nature. Capitalism is the only moral system because it allows individuals the freedom to live their lives for themselves. And that is what humans innately want. It allows people to engage with others as THEY see fit. It allows them to further THEIR own happiness as they see fit. It they fail (yes, people are fallible), it allows them to learn from their mistakes. In short, if your belief in democracy comes with individual rights being the key to that democracy, capitalism is the way. A great deal of the economic problems we've created are because we have stood in the way of it.

It's a bad Twitter headline. You probably won't agree with its ultimate conclusion - be a little more like Sweden - but it's not a rant.

Perhaps a better way of arguing against capitalism is to say: Sooner or later, the people who have been screwed over repeatedly will turn to the one advantage they have: Physical threat. When they do that, it will be immoral and wrong, but it will be a natural response capitalism eventually produces.

You can't be serious. For starters, the question was long and rambling, with only a small, completely hypothetical reference to MS-13 at the end. The rest of it was just about challenges to ICE in communicating with federal databases.

But read Trump's response. He immediately - the first words he said - pivoted past MS-13 to a much more vague, expansive "people trying to come into the country" whom he's going to let us "take out." The entire point of that feint is trying to conflate groups - "people trying to come in" are conflated with gang members who are conflated with "not people, animals." There's always some real offense by some specific member of a disfavored group that's brought up to rationalize the nebulous "they" who are, in this case, animals and savages. But the specific case (which is barely even nodded at here) is merely a pretext for the generalization.

Of course, MS-13 isn't representative of either the "people trying to come in" or those being "taken out." The point of the dehumanizing language is to allow you not to think about who the people affected really are.

The problem with capitalism today is that it differs completely with free market capitalism as it was invented or discovered. It works in a largely localized agrarian economy where similar products aren’t differentiated by any thing other than price. And it works in that economy with other goods and services that he consumer has full information as to who made the product and who is delivering the service. Money markets and equity markets and commodity markets which largely drive the decision making process for suppliers of raw material and the creation of goods and services have almost no transparency. Insurance and reinsurance along with a lack of personal liability for owners and easy bankruptcy laws for large commercial debtors have taken the risk out of business. Capitalism is not a fair marketplace any longer.
But democracy, which is an anathema to capitalists and conservatives, is necessary for free markets to exist. Capitalists hate capitalism. Their goal is monopolies.
