    To what extent were the Nazi sympathizers and supporters in the 1930s and 40s as complicit with the government even if they were not Nazi party members or leaders?

    I'm sure someone else has a better answer but sometimes you could be a Nazi and also regarded as an enemy by Hitler. During the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, a whole bunch of the SA - the paramilitary wing of the party - got purged.
