Once detained minors are in the foster care system, they are then subject to a tangle of state laws. Since there are 300 immigration judges and a backlog of 800,000 cases, it could be 2-4 years before some of them are released from custody.

Also, when parents of minor detainees are deported, most essentially have no means to contact their children, or afford to pay for legal representation. That means they may not see their children again until they are adults.
