You've talked about balance of power disagreements. The question of what is a conservative to me means popular sovernty, limited government and federalism.

On the contrast being a progressive means you believe those things with a "yes but" clause. Popular sovernty yes but we have to make sure everyone gets a wedding cake or make sure nobody takes this drug. Limited government yes but we have to make sure everyone has health insurance or a nation on the other side of the world is protected. Federalism yes but every state has to have the same laws on abortion and we need a national department of education to manage the schools.

I don't know what conservative means anymore. I don't see very many of them around these days. There are a lot of progressive in the world.

 

It's almost like conservatives are Scotsmen, and there's not one authentic Scotsmen to be found.
