Also important: The two major political parties are private organizations, free to set whatever rules for their nomination process they'd like. No one has any sort of constitutional guarantee for any particular rights in the nomination process. The Republicans, for instance, could hold a national primary, and then through out the votes and nominate whomever they'd like, short of any binding GOP rules.
