McCain might have been the most military interventionalist candidate this nation has seen in more than a generation. Seems a lot of people are forgetting that.

Putin on steroids would never hold a candle to the havoc McCain would have wreaked around the world. After 9/11? I shudder to think how expansive our "bring 'em to justice" net would have swung.

We return now to our regularly scheduled eulogizing.

Trump say something nice about McCain, even after he's dead? Not our petty and vindictive President.

This is where Trump's nature is going to kill him. Trump will not have the sense to be kind or at least quiet about Pecker and Weisselberg, he's going to snipe at them and give them hell. He just can't help himself. He'll do it, even knowing that they are outside the tent and in a wonderful position to piss into it. We don't know what Pecker has in a safe somewhere, but we *do* know that Weisselberg could absolutely break Trump if he decides to testify without restraints.

If Trump gets up in a shitty mood one morning next week and takes to trashing them on Twitter, they may decide that they've seen this show before and jump to ending it on their own terms. At this point the advantages of remaining loyal are much less persuasive than in the past. The disadvantages are obvious.

Wasn’t he also against the US use of torture?

Item 2 is a direct result of Item 1. By the time he got to the convention, he already knew he’d get slaughtered in November.

As for Item 3, sometime during the 2008 campaign cycle McCain morphed from “the maverick on the Straight Talk Express” to “just another generic Republican.” Had he applied his 2000 message and strategy to 2008, we still might not have had President John McCain but the campaign would have been far more interesting. The GOP bigwigs forced McCain to adopt so-called “mainstream GOP messaging” along with Palin as a sop to the lunatic wing (see also: Item 4) and emasculated him as a candidate.

The far left, DSA left, the anti war left, and the Glenn Greenwald left hate McCain with a fury that Trump supporters will never be able to match.

And, just saying something fairly nice about him will earn you their ire, as seen in the replies to this tweet:

McCain voted against MLK national holiday.

How dare he try to deny me my God-given right to another day of time-and-a-half pay.

It takes time for a scandal to work on public opinion unless it has a development that comes as a complete surprise to most folks, like the Saturday Night Massacre or the Iran-Contra deal, which burst out of the blue via a scoop by a Lebanese newspaper.
