The scientist I am writing about is trying to get $610 million to build a piece of space hardware that would allow us to see alien worlds in a whole new way. It could change our understanding of the universe and our place in it. She can't get the money. But the Air Force is spending nearly $100 billion on 100 new Stealth bombers that will hopefully never drop a bomb. They could build 99 bombers and her space hardware and have a few hundred million left over. Never mind what that $100 billion could do for education or healthcare or a bajillion more worthwhile things.

    American defense spending is obscene.

It's another result of a political system dominated by old white people with money in a world where young nonwhite people with not nearly so much money (although not as poor as they used to be) are the vast majority. We throw money at the armed forces out of fear that without the world's largest military, we have pissed away most of our claims to world leadership. It's not as extreme as Putin's Russia, which would be a third-class power without its armed forces (mostly its nuclear arsenal), but it's the same basic thing.

I agree with you. I think you are saying it in a qualitative way, not a quantitative way. The U.S. spends more on weapons and "defense" than the next 7 countries combined. That includes China and Russia. My sensibilities tell me we should be spending JUST enough to have a deterrent. And at the same time, we should be really judicious about how we use it. We can't be the world's police force.

From a quantitative perspective, though, we are bankrupting ourselves spending well more than half a trillion dollars a year on this stuff, and we have our heads in the sand. It's all predicated on our ability to borrow more and more. People dismiss that, because the U.S. has been running up debt for decades now. What is lost in the conversation is how much we have ratcheted it up in just the last 10 years -- exponentially taking it to a new place. There is a limit to it. We are behaving like there isn't. As I said, they won't stop until there is a crisis and there is no choice.

I just can't imagine a world in which a billion-dollar bomber makes sense to anyone. My brain just doesn't work that way.

This is just a new application of one of Trump's strategies. Trump was clearly planting the seeds to declare the results of the election were not legitimate if he had lost to Clinton.

I'm not a fan of the show they were on, but they got a big kick out of it.

Like with the car shows, they manufactured drama to try to make the storyline more interesting. They had this whole bit about my brother-in-law being upset about losing his garage to the renovation (the tiny garage was converted to living space). He didn't care about that garage, which was basically an oversized shed. He just built an actual shed after filming was done. It was weird to see that playing out on the show.

When they went to sell it, I was curious what would happen with the inspection because the show had moved some walls around to give them "an open concept." But everything checked out. The buyers had seen the show and even asked the engineer to specifically evaluate those things.

Nothing new here. Gummint spends on defense to keep the Lockheed riveter from beating his wife. Simple!
