Has Trump disrespected America by capitalizing the C for another Country? Discuss!

Trump is a troll. It is a horrible thing for a president to be because the media cannot not respond to it. What's more, Trump has no idea where troll ends and "what the hell, maybe it's true" begins. It's hard to know what he means to be BS, what he means to be real, and what he's just saying because he wants to pop off at a critic.

But it's absolutely part of his appeal to his base. They foolishly love his devil's advocacy and live vicariously through it, because we've all had decades of politicians that lie like Paul Ryan and Bill Clinton do, masterfully and with gravity and intellect. They're phonies. Trump's more real to them because he's a blowhard and a scoundrel. He's their guy because he offends the media and other politicians. Trump benefits from how loathed - and elitist - both of those massive institutions have become.

And I'm not sure you can put the toothpaste back in the tube easily on either institution. Journalism in particular is tethered to academia in ways it never shouldn't be; journalism is no longer common folks hitting the streets and telling stories so much as Ivy League, Northwestern, Michigan, Missouri and Indiana grads from their top of their classes, on big scholarships, usually from upper middle-class families, married to their laptops and phones.

Trump is byproduct of so many things - including the concerted ugliness of the Republican Party - that it's always been hard, for me, to just transfer all of my distaste onto him. He's president for a reason, and the reason is us, and somehow, it's not any of our faults. It's everybody else's - most notably his.
