    Absolutely.

Saudia Arabia has a totally firm grasp on who are the militants muslims and who are not. ... it's only their expansive civil rights which prevent the government from rounding up the terrorists.

I would assume, if true, it is because he wants to be able to campaign in California and New York next time and redeem his popular vote loss.

Many Jews were active communists or socialists. My grandfather helped stockpile guns for the socialists when he should have been going to high school. He watched a friend (and highly influential playwright) heave communist literature over the side of the boat as they approached port in the US. Shoulda been turned away. Too likely to turn on this great land. (This of course ignores the potential spy angle).

It's interesting to know these Muslims are "likely" to turn on America. Just good to know, I guess.

Anyone could turn on America. What was the political affiliation of Tim McVeigh? Or Ted Kasinski? Communist or Socialist?

Can you back this with a link? Because I believe that's incorrect--the suspension applies to the issuance of visas--legal permanent residents do not need visas. And, again, I'd point out that we're talking only about a 90-day suspension of visas from the seven countries, not an indefinite ban.

FWIW, by no means am I suggesting that I support the order (I do not), just pointing out that you've been making it sound more draconian than it actually is. There's far more than enough legitimate grounds for bashing Trump, no need to resort to embellishment.

    YF,
Can you link to stories about green card. Twitter is obviously hard to determine one way or the other. I have seen that at JFK they were doing green cards on a case by case basis. But again, Twitter. Would like to read something concrete.

The fellow who's tweet I posted is a NYTimes reporter who cited his own reporting.

Maybe there was confusion in the early hours after the EO was signed, but permanent residents are not subject to the ban.

(And, let's be clear, if you are a permanent resident, you have a green card.)

Silly name. There isn't that much green in it.

    Here's the story he co-authored.

Green card holders are "distraught", but there's no indication they will be kept out.

Visa holders who are out of the country are subject to the ban, but they are not permanent residents.

Passport-holders from those countries, who have American visas but are outside the United States, will not be permitted to return.

The divide we have in this country and complete lack of understanding between Americans is truly not something I ever expected to see in my lifetime. That might be as scary as anything.

I think Trump voters made a huge mistake, but boiling it down to "they are racists who chose a side, so fuck them" is simplistic and doesn't get us anywhere. Sure, the xenophobes are Trump's loudest supporters and played a significant role in getting him elected. That sucks. It's embarrassing as an American and it can't be overlooked.

But look at the numbers and the election turned on people in the Rust Belt who voted for Obama twice, TWICE!, shifting to Trump this time. Did they just become racist last year?

Micheal Gee reminds me a little of my dad in that his lack of understanding flyover country is equal to how much my father doesn't get and/or doesn't care about NYC, LA and the like.

This is a bit anecdotal and going to sound a little like the old "I have black friends" excuse, but I looked at the county I grew up in, Bob Dole's home county. They voted for Trump, though not in as much of a landslide as Romney or McCain. I don't agree with their vote this time around, but I also know they aren't bad people. My hometown of about 400 people is the most welcoming, colorblind community I've ever known, including the places I've lived that always vote Democrat.

It's mostly white, of course, but there are black families, Filipinos, Hispanics. The issues that are important to people there have long been much more about rural vs. urban, flyover vs. coastal than white vs. non-white.

Hermes had a great post earlier. These people get hung up on a few issues, and they don't always totally understand them. Inheritance taxes for farmers is a huge one. A fear of the EPA and what it means for farmers and factories is another. That was just about the only reason my grandfather supported Bush over Gore in 2000. Abortion and the Supreme Court are obviously huge, highly emotional issues. Frankly, something like Syrian refugees isn't really even on the radar. It's likely somewhere between Bronx trash pickup and Sacramento parking fees among things that seen like "real" issues.

It's not like these people particularly like Trump. My dad wrote in Kasich because "one thing worse than the Clintons is a New York blowhard who isn't as smart or cool as he thinks." They could have been convinced Hillary was the lesser of two evils if anybody cared to find out and address what matters to them.

    Reading his feed now.

    And the story. Thanks.

(We're in South Africa for seven weeks right now and wife, permanent resident, is freaking out, even though I keep saying it's these seven countries, stressing that SA is not going to be on any list, etc., but I also appreciate her anxiousness and unease while doing best to alleviate. And if green cards aren't on it I can at least use that as well as the fact SA isn't going to be on it, etc.)
