Like it or loathe it, it's hard to argue that California's not a pretty damn good political trendsetter. See Governors Nixon and Reagan and the Orange Curtain for proof. I can say for certain that the Republican Party pretty much doesn't exist any more here in California, thanks to a combination of changing demographics and a party's unwillingness to change with them. This leads me to believe that a decade from now, the Republican Party will be about as nationally powerful as the green party is today. The Mark Sanford's of the party are simply pissing into the wind; his party is quickly withering on the vine.
