In the moment, of course, Tiger hates to lose. But he knows on his golf tombstone that there won't be a word about his match-play record, so I think the minute the plane leaves from these things, he's thinking about next year's Masters and has forgotten completely about the Presidents/Ryder Cup.

Just for the hell of it:

The Nos. 1, 2 and 3 golfers on the current World Rankings, and their team match-play records (Ryder and Presidents Cup combined).

    Tiger: 23-2-3 (.474)
    Mickelson: 20-25-13 (.388)
    Furyk: 19-20-4 (.463)
    Total: 62-69-20 (.440)

The problem with the U.S. in the Ryder Cup is that the team has consistently gone into the matches with at least three of the top-five players in the world (Woods, Mickelson and Furyk were 1-2-3 the week of last year's Ryder Cup), and they've got a combined 25-37-8 record. Hell, those three in the Presidents Cup were only 8-5-2 last week, in a rout for the team. Good thing Verplank was 4-0.

The U.S. Ryder Cup record starts at the top. And those guys aren't getting it done.

The problem with the Ryder Cup is the losers they pick to captain the squad. Typically very good, but not great players. Hell, I'd put the Golden Bear in that spot every year or have Tiger be the playing captain.

The Bear had two shots at the Ryder Cup. He's 1-1, losing in 1987 on his home course at Muirfield Village.

That's true but the difference between the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup is that the draws are done blindly in the Ryder Cup. In the Presidents Cup once the US selected its pick, the International team would pick right after -- thats why the Weir-Woods matchup was discussed all week.

Because of that, Tiger and Phil got matched up with the International's best while Verplank was matched up with players such as Sabbatini and Immelman. Tiger went 3-2 on the week and even though he lost 5 and 4 to Vijay on Friday, Singh was on fire and had birdies on 11 of the first 14 holes. Thats not to take away what Verplank did -- Austin and Glover were also huge.

I'm sorry, but shouldn't Tiger and Phil be able to wax anyone they're paired against?

Unless I'm not understanding the calculations, you sure about Tiger's record? He's only lost twice in match play?
