We'll see if they make it through 2012. If they don't that's probably the end of AOL. Tim Armstrong will probably fold the company into Yahoo! With its legacy dial-up subscription business dying AOL simply doesn't have relevance anymore.

I'm sorry, but there's no way that patch.com will survive in the long run.

The business model just doesn't work.

And, like the Michael Scott Paper Company, their continued growth is just going to fuel their eventual demise. They're piling up more and more costs and gaining little additional revenue.

That was still a genius move by Michael. He impresses me sometimes.

I knew you'd appreciate the reference.

I've only just started to watch that show in reruns in the last couple of months. I'd never watched even a single episode before. It's fucking genius and I can't believe I ignored it for so long.

Michael set up a game of Chicken and won. I don't see it working out the same way for Patch.

Patches is actually a little before my time. I think I was 2, when the song came out.

But classic night -- when I lived in Chicago in my mid to late 20s, my best friend and I (journalist who also occasionally frequents this site) were drunk one night and got to talking about the song. How perfect it is. Clarence Carter's sad voice. The over-the-top heart-wrenching story. And we may have been the only two people at that point (in the mid to late 90s) who even remembered that song, let alone could sing it word for word.

Drunk, we decided to try to get a radio station to play it for us. We called every radio station in town, including the top 40 stations with the set play lists. There wasn't a DJ who had any clue about the song, except one. And his response was something akin to, "Are you nuts? I can't play that."

We were yelling at each of them, "What kind of world is it when you can't get a radio station to play 'Patches'?!?!?"

It still was one of the funnier, stupider moments in my life and it kept us busy for an evening.

I picked up a CD called Rhythm Country & Blues a few years ago that featured duets with Country stars and Blues stars:

George Jones & BB King do a version of Patches that just kills.
