I was looking through some boxes of old stuff the other day and found a poster that advertised "Big Time Wrestling" at a local high school. This was from the early- to mid-80s, I believe. The card:

-- Andre the Giant vs. Bruiser Brody
-- Playboy Gary Hart vs. Big Bad Leroy Brown
-- Kevin Von Erich vs. Karl Krupp
-- David Von Erich vs. Tim Brook (I assume this was supposed to be Killer Tim Brooks, who worked this area a lot)

Ticket prices: $3 for adults, $2.50 for children; $3.50 at the door for all ages.

    That's one helluva lineup.

I got home yesterday and flipped on Fox News for background noise, and who should be on Neil Cavuto's show talking about some billionaire's buyout of Chrysler but former WWE'er JBL. I had no idea the guy was actually some sort of financial guru. Just kind of blew my mind.
Then I got to thinking, what other wrestling-types have legitimate credentials in fields outside of wrestling? I know Tony Schiavone reads news in the morning on WSB in Atlanta, and Jonathan Coachman does college football games for CSTV or some regional network like that. Who else is out there?

Wasn't Sparky Plugg (or Hardcore Holly) a NASCAR driver? :)

And I always pronounced it Tony SKEE-VON-E (I think that's the way Heenan always said it)...

JBL made a crapload of money in the market, and the juxtapositioning of that and his job as a pro rassler (to say nothing of his strong voice) got him an analyst job at MSNBC. Then he made a Nazi salute during a pre-match promo in Germany and lost it.

Jim Ross has some background doing college football with Oklahoma and, of course, the XFL. Schiavone I believe did minor league baseball as well, and Coachman was hired by the WWF from the CBS affiliate in Kansas City, brought to McMahon's attention by his coverage of ... Owen Hart's death. And former WWF announcer Sean Mooney had a long career at WWOR (he may still be there for all I know).

Didn't Jim Ross call Falcons games for a while, too?

That sounds right. I couldn't remember if it was the Falcons or Ga. Tech, but I do remember he did something while in Atlanta.

That's got to be from about 1982 or thereabouts, before Andre and Leroy Brown were in the WWF. Great card. I would have loved to have seen Brody once before he was murdered.

I didn't go to the show because I had to work, but my little sister went. She said Andre's legs were as big around as she was.

I would liked to have seen Brusier too, but I did shoot pictures of Abdullah the Butcher in a match once. I'm not sure if they two guys ever got into the ring. They fought all over the convention center and ended up trashing a whole table of food that had been donated for distribution to the needy.

And that's why we got the billionaire JBL on SmackDown now. They're letting him play his real life character.

As opposed to seeing Brody once AFTER he was murdered? (he he)

Kevin Von Erich would have to pay me to watch him wrestle. Lame pro wrestler.
