From what I can remember, Buddy Rogers (heal) held the belt for awhile before losing it to Bruno Samartino (face), who held the strap for the three centuries (I think he beat William Henry Harrison at one point) before losing to ... who was it?
    Ivan Koloff (transition heal)?
Then Koloff lost to Pedro Morales (transition face)?
Then Morales lost to Stan Stasiak (transition heal)?
(Someone will have to correct me on this ...)
Either Bruno got the belt back before losing to Superstar Billy Graham, one of the all-time great heals.
In retrospect, Graham looks like a transitional champ between Bruno and Howdy Doody (Backlund), but many people in the old WWWF argued long and hard to keep the strap on The Superstar. Vince McMahon Sr. wanted a face champ, even though most people in the WWWF believed Backlund wasn't ready to carry the load. Even Vince Jr., wanted his dad to leave the Superstar as champ for a much longer period and establish him an icon.
Makes you wonder how things would have turned out for Graham and Backlund if Graham had been allowed to keep the belt.
The Superstar is one of my all-time favorites and I've been known to YouTube him from time to time, just to watch "The Reflection of Perfection" strut his stuff. He was truly an innovator in a field where imitation is rampant.

One Night Stand card for Sunday (w/Claws' predictions)

WWE Champion John Cena vs. The Great Khali (Pinfalls Count Anywhere Match) -- Cena wins
ECW World Champion Mr. McMahon vs. Bobby Lashley (Street Fight) -- Lashley wins title, Shane or Umaga mess up for VKM
World Heavyweight Champion Edge vs. Batista (Steel Cage Match) -- Edge wins
Melina vs Candice Michelle (Pudding Match, non-title) -- Candice wins
World Tag Team Champions The Hardys vs. The World's Greatest Tag Team (Ladder Match) -- WGTT wins titles
6-Man Tag Tables Match -- Sandman, Dreamer, Punk vs. Burke, CorVon and Stryker -- Stryker or Sandman will lose it.
Randy Orton vs. RVD (Stretcher Match) -- RVD's finally burial in WWE, he'll leave WWE and head straight to Japan
Kane vs. Mark Henry (Lumberjack Match) -- Who cares, but Henry gets the nod

Benoit vs. MVP is off the card, but I'd guess they'd be lumberjacks and find a way to keep their feud going through this match. I'd guess that Finlay and Boogeyman are also lumberjacks and will do something to the other, too.

Another strong commentary from Lance Storm, this time talking about so many deaths in pro wrestling and how scary it is that EVERYWHERE he's worked, he was able to rattle off people at every stage of his career who have died, all under 50 years of age and in many cases those under 40.

Make some sense since Khali won tonight's match.
I can't believe I'm about to watch the chairman of the board in an arm-wrestling match.

    PS - I miss Triple H.

Hell, just get a camera backstage and you'll see HHH. He's the one pulling all the puppet strings.

I'd like to see a heel Benoit go to Raw, beat Cena for the title and have Cena chase. At least something similar to Cena-HBK so that Cena can actually learn something from a vet rather than do three moves against a tree with hair.

I was thinking the same thing. Finally saw Backlash with the four-way. It was really good. It's amazing how stale things got with Shawn's injury. Hopefully they will return to the workrate approach post draft. Benoit would be a good choice and maybe the reason behind the title switch with MVP.

I think the WWE realizes things are quickly getting stale. I don't expect tonight's buyrate to be very high at all. Well below the last two ONS's obviously. The draft should shake things up, create new feuds for the summer, and hopefully bring new life to a dull product that has been ravaged by injuries.

  11. Didn't get the PPV, but I hear my main man Shelton did some insane stuff during the ladder match.

Anyone who did shell out the bucks care to share their thoughts?

I didn't see it, but apparently only one match had blood. How sad is it that the ECW-themed PPV for the last two years is now a gimmick card for WWE -- and not even a good gimmick card at that (no Hell in a Cell, no Elimination Chamber, no TLC, no cruiserweights and an "escape" cage match instead of a good one), with only the faintest nod to ECW in the form of two matches? Not unexpected, but still a shame.
