I did not say that you called me an idioit. Do you know how to read?

Obviously you think I'm an idiot. And I know the meaning of the word ignorant.

So now that I clarified some things about my market, about my paper, and some of the schools in my coverage area, do you still think my perspective is ignorant?

Annnd Tom Petty proves you don't have to be a complete newbie to come up with something completely asinine.

That first paragraph may be the dumbest thing I've read in a month. And I read this board frequently, so that's saying something.

Also, sounds like sartrean's paper should be covering rec soccer. If that's where the best players are.

Oh, and just so we're on the same page, Tom Petty there is implying that this guy:

Is an "unathletic dork" (paraphrase) as compared to this guy:

(And that's just one of the smaller pictures I used to keep people from having to adjust their eyes.)

    sartrean,

I played soccer until I was 17 and I agree it doesn't deserve that much coverage. We run daily roundups and schedules, cover maybe one match per week and send photogs to get standalones once or twice a week (same for volleyball). Soccer is fun to play, but is incredibly boring to watch. Fortunately, it's one of those few sports that you can show up at halftime, take a look at the scorebook/stat sheet and not miss much (many times no one has scored yet).

    With that said ...

    1) What kind of games are you watching that last 3.5 hours? In many states, the games are two hours tops until the postseason. At least in Kentucky, you have two 40-minutes halves and that's it. No sudden-death, overtime or penalty kicks (until playoffs that is) to decide a winner.

    2) There is a huge difference between rec and compet or club teams. Most rec teams, in my area at least, are awful compared to rec or club teams and should never be compared to the latter in terms of talent or quality of play. It's like comparing a church-league coed hoops team to a HS basketball team.

Do not pick a fight with my intelligence. You will not win.

The way I see it, your initial statements had two points: first, that soccer in your area doesn't warrant coverage, and second, that soccer as a sport doesn't warrant coverage because you don't understand a 1-1 tie or low-scoring game.

I had no problem with your first point, because each coverage area is different. Your directives from the higher-ups may be to ignore soccer until the postseason or whatever. That's fine. I understand that. But unless you have been directed to do otherwise, you can't just blow off a sport because you don't like it.

Which brings me to the next point. Your statements on soccer as a sport are the ones I found to be ignorant. I tried - obviously a futile effort - to enlighten you on how to cover a soccer match properly in a way that makes a 1-1 tie mean something to the readers. Because, like it or not, it is your job to know how to do so. God forbid your next gig involve covering an MLS team or something. The real idiots would be those who would hire you to that position.

And in other news, Grandma wants to know why we haven't written about her baby yet.

Well Grandma, your little sweetie decided it was a good idea to call in and complain about the lack of coverage nine days into the season. Then, when talking to her coach, I bring this up. Coach says, in the nicest way possible, that she's a bitch and there are five girls on that volleyball team that are more talented and better human beings.

But my official response: "There are a lot of athletes on a lot of school teams deserving of coverage, Ma'am. We try to get to as many as we can."

It's all about pulling them on through the turnstile.

Hey TP, are you really trying to insult me by inferring that I'm feminine? Oh, right, because women are the weaker sex. Awesome. How old are you, exactly, and which position on the offensive line do you play?

We had that this summer when a prep softball player e-mailed us bitching because we wrote how her error let in the only run for the opponent in the doubleheader. The highlight was when she said her parents had to deal with "the blunt of my tears and anger." Blunt?
