    Back on day one.
My wife and our two best friends picked today about two weeks ago to quit. We went out last night, had a few drinks, downed a few packs and made it official.

The last time I really stopped, I lasted two-plus months. I'm hoping this time is better.

I've already done the math, and my wife and I have saved $2.75 today already (I was at a pack and a half a day; she was slightly less).

    Wish me luck.

Good luck, MU. It's a great idea having the four of you quit at once. You have each other to rely on for support. If you start to cave, just think about all that money you're saving.

So here is an update on my progress. At the beginning of the year I made the decision to cut way back on my smoking. I am officially at less than one pack per day now. This is real progress for me, since I was at more than 2 packs a day prior to that. There is usually one bad day per week where I go well over the one pack per day limit that I have set for myself. I feel like today/this evening is going to be one of those days. I'm trying to stay strong, but feel it's going to be "one of those nights." I'm going to see AA tonight, which in theory sounds like it could help me, but I realize that is not really what is going to happen. So, wish me luck and send me some good vibes that I have a better night than I anticipate. Thank you!

Good luck. But try not to worry too much about it if you have a bad night. Like many of us have said, you'll quit when you're ready. And the fact that you are cutting back most of the time is a positive step.

I have picked May 11 as my day to quit smoking.

Think of the Heartbreakers. That should give you strength.

Good luck, LiesIntx. Let us know how you do. Plus, if you're really serious about this, you have three-plus weeks to ween yourself to where hopefully May 11 won't be so difficult.

You can do it, Liesl! The patch is working for me, but here's a story with some ideas that might also help.

I am approaching 2 months off the nicotine. I have days when I think about it a lot, but I just have to keep my mind busy, and it's gotten much, much easier.

Weening myself off a bit is part of why I picked a date in the future. Also, at that time, I will be done with school for a few weeks and will only have my part-time job to occupy my time. Which will be a good thing for me, as I'll have lots of time to go through the detoxification process. I know from past quitting experiences how freaking sick I will get. I need a good 6 weeks to get through the process.

I think I will do it this time without the patch. I've tried it before and it never really worked all that well for me. I am going to find a way to pay for the medicine (I believe it's called Chantix) to help me get through it. I've heard good things about it helping people.

Update: I didn't make the May 11 quit date. But that does not mean there has not been progress. There has been. I have cut back considerably, to the point that I am feeling sick. But this is to be expected and I view it as a good thing.

I began the Chantix medication today, and as a result, have set a new quit date of June 5. I feel better about this date than any other I have ever uttered in the past. For the first time ever, I don't feel apprehensive about saying it out loud.

Pulling for you on this one, Liesl. I know it's going to be hard, but the rewards will be well worth it.
