Retarded means something is stupid, gay means something is silly. I don't happen to think mentally challenged people are stupid nor do I think gay people are silly. Words don't always mean the same thing to all people and sometimes they don't have a meaning, but a feeling. For instance someone might say "that's a bitch" and in that case they are talking about a tough situation or something going wrong, they are not talking about a woman. It has a totally different meaning. Now my words are not as accepted in polite society, because of the way they are taken, as bitch is , so I don't use them in public.

 

Do you have a black friend as well?

 

Why not just empathize with the people who find them offensive and stop using them entirely?
