Radio, newspaper, and my ethics

If Canzano worked in a city with two daily metros, did his radio show on an independent station and saw the columnist from the other shop sign on with the NBA team owner's station, do you think he might see a conflict of interest? Or would he just be a) a jealous bastard, or b) trying to act like he's perfect?

Guess there's c) he would think it's just ducky.

Have I done anything to lead you to believe I'm ethically soiled? On the other hand, have I claimed to be ethically pure? All I've said is that it's flat-out wrong in the newspaper business for a journalist to have a financial relationship with someone he covers. If that makes you mad, that's your problem.

I'm guessing that Canzano would continue to be a pro at doing his job and not worry about the other columnist's (apparent) conflict of interest. Again, in your hypothetical situation, that would be between Joe Columnist, his paper and the radio station.

You're making a black-white, right-wrong argument out of a topic that's all full of grays. That leads me to believe you're riding a high horse.

You're leaving out one very important party -- the reader. If the reader thinks that you have a conflict of interest, more than likely you lose the reader, and more readers care about who we're taking money from than we think.

This just strikes me as Jimmy Stewart's character actually taking Mr. Potter's job offer and going to work for him, instead of fighting him via the Bailey Building & Loan.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Ancient times. Ethics are for those old Greek guys in bedsheets.

    Sportschick:
I think most readers _ and probably Canzano's readers _ are smart enough to tell if they see Canzano becoming a Blazers' apologist. If Canzano keeps writing his opinion _ HIS OPINION _ on what's going on with the Blazers, then nothing has changed but his bank account.
In general, I think newspapers treat their readers like they've got an IQ of 65. Canzano believes his readers are smart people.

Nobody here is vilifying John. Most of us have gone out of the way to say how much we admire him.
We're just trying to understand how he got to a place that, traditionally, was a journalistic no-no. When did the rules change?
John, you write, “I'm not "taking" anything from anyone.” Is your paycheck not coming from Paul Allen? If so that makes a huge difference.

And those who criticize Dooley for his opinion should realize he’s in a position to know and influence. All I'm saying.
