As if some of these NIAFL types didn't already think they were the center of the universe.

I would stay away from Vegas at the end of the month. Just saying.

    That is some wise advice.

Especially since you have the self-restaint of a 2-year-old.

That's right! We're supposed to have a wedding there! Complete with hockey jerseys for the bridesmaids and a squid bouquet!

What do people here think of ubiquitous Michael Smith at ESPN? I like him. Smart, intelligent. Knows his stuff. Star on the rise.

I wish they'd give Reali more stuff to do. He's great on ATH (the best show on ESPN), but he should be doing more, too.

Big Baby Jesus jerseys to be exact. Y'all are wearing black ones and I'm wearing white. It'll totally rawk, esp. if Clever shows up to play the groom.

Our good man Elliotte just messaged me with a link from the Globe and Mail (though it keeps crashing my computer so he has to cut and paste the story) saying that Ed Hervey is retiring from the CFL. It made me realize how long I've been doing this; started in the LBC in 1989. I covered Hervey during his football and track days at Compton High. Fantastic young man. In track, Compton qualified 5 guys for the California State Championships in 1991, but only 4 of them scored -- and scored enough points to give the Tarbabes the state team championship. Hervey tweaked a hammy during Friday qualifying but wrapped it up tight and sucked it up enough to run during Saturday's finals. The 4x200 relay is one of those "moments" that make you wish you could watch it over and over and over; like Game 7 of the '91 World Series. I was lucky enough to cover Willie McGinest at Poly and saw Nomar turn double plays at St. John Bosco a few games, and thousands of athletes in lots of states would follow over the years. Few of them resonate with me like Ed Hervey still does. Never saw him play a game in the CFL. The Hervey I'll remember is the one who was getting his leg wrapped in the tent at the state championships, taking his Compton beanie off his head and giving it to me. I didn't ask for it. I'd covered Compton all season, and I guess that was his way of saying thanks. I still have that hat. When I die, it's going into the grave with me.

    Was it a Fletch-sized afro?

Bigger. When I followed the Grateful Dead for awhile, everyone on Shakedown Street wanted to take photos with me. People took hundreds of photos of me. Wish I could see them all these years later.

Love the Fletch reference, too. One of my top 5 favorite movies.
