Where would one find the game story from the Buffalo-Houston playoff game? They're showing that on NFL's Greatest Games right now and I've always wondered how that story was crafted.

While in shower, I had the best idea for a story. Doing this story would require me staying up almost all night, chasing down a few interview tomorrow and accepting the fact that it really couldn't be quite as good as it would have been had this thought came to me exactly 12 hours ago.

I write for a weekly paper, our deadline is tomorrow at 5 p.m. I'd really be pushing it in some regards ... but I really really really like the idea. I could do it in the future, but looking back, today was really the perfect storm for it. I can't imagine all the pieces falling together any better.

Should I go big, or play it safe?

(p.s. I'll be up at least three more hours writing as is)

Why can't you save it? Write what is in your head now, but finish it (ie: don't kill yourself) for next week or whenever.

So there you have it. Two completely different answers. Glad we could help.

Now that I think about it, fuck it. Do it. Maybe I'm just masochistic, but that's probably what I would do anyway. It's better when it's in your head fresh.

  8. Take it and run with it now. It won't sound as good tomorrow and you'll be looking for another idea. That's my personal experience.

Let me tell you a little too much about it and me (not worried about anyone stealing it ... I mean, it's not that original or cool, just perfect storm, like I said) ...

Anyway, today was the first day of spring sports for my main high school, and there were a lot of new faces, far more than I realized until I was plotting this all out/rinsing shampoo from hair.

There was a new superstar freshman on the varsity boys tennis team who started his day at 9 a.m. at his first tournament. He went on to finish in the top four (not sure where though, had to leave and have an interview with the coach set up for tomorrow morning.)

Then in the afternoon a new baseball coach and a new softball coach started. A freshman stud pitcher started for the softball team, a freshman stud played very well at short stop, turning what was a god awful defensive team into a pretty solid one almost all by herself.

Then in the evening a freshman stud started for the girls soccer team and scored its only two goals, including the game winner in double overtime.

How it all lays out in my head is like this : sort of a minute-by-minute of these kids first day, all mashed together, starting with them waking up and being super nervous (I didn't talk to all of them, but I did talk to a few, and talked to their coaches and teammates, and each was picked out as being especially nervous), then going to the kid playing tennis, then the coaches coaching, then girl pitching, then the kid scoring the game-winning goal, about 9 p.m. All the sports were varsity, btw, and whether I write them like this or not, they'll make up all of my paper this week.

What seemed cool about it was how each of the kids wasn't just nervous, but people made a point of it, more so than even the other new kids or freshmen, and second, at least the two softball girls, I sat by their parents and they both were about to faint every time something happened. The pitcher's mom got up and helped her daughter warm up, kept giving pitching advice ...

I'm sure it's always that way, freshman and new coaches are always nervous, and parents are always about to faint, but it just seemed I had a unique view inside of it all today, and unique anecdotes to tell about almost every one.

So yeah, I could save it for another sports season when I knew a bunch of kids were coming up, but to have two coaches and that many game-changing players, and for it to be set so perfectly time wise ... eesshh.

    Or does it totally suck?

To make it happen, I'd have to piece together what I could tonight, then scramble after school tomorrow to track down the rest, run back to the office and fill in a few quotes.

If you do it right and don't turn it into a list, it could be quite an interesting read.

  11. Why don't you go write it instead of coming on here and writing about not writing it?

  12. The idea is intriguing ... write it ...
