Had my first Wegman's experience the other day. I could get used to it, though maybe a little overwhelming at first.

Wegman's is wonderful. I would move in if they had beds.

I already love it for its beer selection. It circumvents PA's arcane liquor laws by being considered an "eatery" as well as a grocery store.

That's just one of many reasons to love it. The selection on just about everything is amazing, and for those of us on a tight budget, Wegmans brand is cheaper and better than most national brands. And I usually hate grocery store brand food. Also, it's nice to interact with workers who actually seem happy to be at work, likely because they are treated well as employees.

And they have a better caliber of single moms working the cash registers.

Ever notice how, without fail, every single solitary time you are at a grocery check-out you'll hear at least one employee asking or talking about what time they or a colleague get off or get a break? It is their lone topic of conversation!

I worked during high school at a place where that was the case, where our discussions revolved around days and time off. We weren't jealous and didn't hate the job as much as our souls were being tortured by the monotony of the work that infected even these trivial conversations. Many people on minimum-wage jobs are very guarded about their personal lives. They don't view each other as friends as much as disposable coworkers. The staff changes so fast there's no point in any other view. So the conversation stays light, surface-level and boring as hell. It contributes to the negative work environment, but it's a chicken-or-the-egg situation.

yeah, that's when the customers are around. At other times it reverts back to how clueless the managers are.
In a similar vein, on my high school newspaper staff about half the staff worked at the same grocery store. Most newsroom conversations revolved around work schedules and if someone would be willing to switch shifts.

    Dear senior citizens,

Malls are frustrating to begin with. Malls at Christmas are horrifying. Please, for the love of God, be cognizant that when you suddenly halt in the middle of a busy shopping corridor, you cause mayhem and rage behind you. I know smart phones are confusing. I see you struggling to text, sext, photograph, download, whatever it is you're attempting to do in the middle of thousands of people. But you really need to step to the side. Or go to the food court. Because that's where your destined to go anyway. You and the Mrs. really don't need to both be peering over your glasses at the iPhone with puzzled expressions on your faces while a wall of people are suddenly forced to make game-time decisions with screaming kids as to how to navigate around your confused asses. I almost shoved a freshly-bought Yankee Candle up a distinguished gentleman's starfish today. And that would be hard to explain.

    Thank you
