I wish I could help. I just got my dell laptop back and lost a bunch of shit without a recovery disk.

OK, here is the update (loud sigh):

The replacement laptop finally arrived today. I could use some input from people who are more computer savvy than I am, because:

    -- Dell sent me a different model than the one I bought;
-- Despite me saying weeks ago I did not want a 64-bit system because you can't use Adobe/PDF and some other third-party software with it, Dell sent me a 64-bit system.
-- Despite Dell saying it would only give me 2 GB because that's what I bought (even though I had since upgraded to 4 GB, Dell sent a laptop with a 4 GB and a 2 GB chip inside -- yet registers as having 4 GB, not 6 GB.
-- None of the four memory modules I've bought are compatible with this laptop.

And I've only just begun exploring.

Computer experts, should I keep the 64-bit system? I understand it performs better, but is Adobe ever going to make its software compatible? Would I be waiting forever? I can't imagine having a computer in 2009 that can't work with PDF files.

I can't wait another month for a new computer. This one seems like a better one, but ...

Suggestions? Advice? And why in the hell would 6 GB in a computer show up as only 4 GB?

I am so freaking worn out by this. I could use a little guidance. I don't even have the energy to get into it about how the Barons have ignored my receipts and request for reimbursement for the broken chill mat and for the data recovery. I'll save that for another day -- and for a lawyer.

So, about this laptop ... thoughts?

    Thanks,

    J_D

After trying to learn online about 64-bit encryption I am even more confused. I'm counting on you, morning crew. You too, 2muchcoffeeman. I'm lost.

Well, I know nothing about 64-bit. As far as the memory, try physically removing and re-installing it. Sometimes they're not seated correctly. But if the stuff you need isn't compatible, maybe you can find someone to buy it and use the money to buy one you can use?

Used the word "encryption" by mistake earlier. It's a 64-bit OS. Dell says it will send me a disc with Vista in 32-bit and I have to install that.

    It'll take about a week.

Thanks, Barons. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

What a mess. Weren't you trying to get rid of Vista a few months ago?

Yes. Dell voids parts of the warranty and support agreement if you do.

    JD:
    * I think the problem with the RAM might be the different sizes of the memory modules as Dell likes you to install in pairs -but other websites say you don't have to.
Go to www.memorystore.com and run the memory wizard to see what's compatable with your computer and then order the memory from them. It's guaranteed to work.

    * Unless I missed it, you haven't specified what third-party software needs to be reinstalled. If you don't have an e-mail address that ends in .edu have the kid that broke it order the software you need at the student discount rates available here:

    (or at other websites)

Thanks. What struck me when I opened up the machine was the 2 GB module didn't look anything like the 4 GB module. The system isn't recognizing the 2 GB module, so it must be defective.

That wizard couldn't find a match for me, and in the listing by manufacturer and model type, it didn't have this model laptop listed. I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they recommend...as long as it's cheap. Cheap is all I can afford of anything right now.
