That may be a style rule at the paper. Don't loose sleep over that.

If I edited that sentence, I would have done this:

â€œSmith doubled to (right-center?), driving in (three?) runs to tie the (score, not game), 3-3.

Tying the game, 3-3, is just as redundant as tying the score at 3-3.

The play in question tied the game at 3.

I'm editing it. Not unredundenting it. 3-3 may be the paper's style. And in my book you tie a score. You don't tie a game. Game isn't over.

Yeah, because that's the only time in sports a game has ended in a tie.

By the way, the NHL has an official stat for game-tying goals. They're not called score-tying goals.
