    Here's a way to cut to the core, before this "rewriting":

    what exactly was wrong with how slavery was being presented in the textbooks?

    what did you change/propose to change and why?
    I thought it was pretty clear already, until the end of the Civil War, slavery was legal and nearly every Black in the US was a slave and chattel. Slavery meant someone owned that other human being and could tell that other human being what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and if the owner did not like it could dispose of the slave however he/she saw fit. Oh and the slave had zero rights. What am I missing?
