Heard this on the radio today. Apparantly Lady Gaga posted about Winehouse today. She said, "I remember knowing there was hope, and feeling not alone because of her." The radio guy didn't give context other than it was about her death so I'm not sure what she meant but it seems a very odd quote. Why exactly did she give you hope that you wouldn't be alone? Just struck me as an odd quote.

The general finger-wagging, smugness and moral superiority about Amy Winehouse's death reminds me of the tone of ABC News' coverage of Jimi Hendrix's death in 1970:

I don't know if the "The Jimi Hendrix Experience is over" intro or the "flailed his guitar into some of the most unusual sounds of an unusual music" is the more condescending bit.

I think a few people might be offended with the comparison of Winehouse to Hendrix.

I assume the finger-wagging crowd has as little sympathy for a loved one who dies of cancer after smoking.

And others on this board have taught me that those who pontificate too much about moral superiority are actually acting morally superior themselves.

Who ever said that her family shouldn't feel sympathy? Nobody. But hey, keep making shit up in attempts to make your point.

They may not agree with any sort of comparison between the two, but if they're actually offended by it, they should get over it as well as themselves.

Perhaps you meant to respond to another post, since it seems to have nothing to do with mine.

My point, however, is that if you think that some addict pop singer deserves what she gets for taking drugs, you should feel no sympathy for your mother if she dies from mouth cancer from chewing tobacco.

I understood your point just fine. It is just a really stupid point. Obviously, it makes a difference if it is a loved one. The comparison is a terrible one.

This doesn't really touch on whether her addictions could be conquered, but it's about as artful as a piece of music writing/criticism as you'll find. The people most inclined to say "Eh, one-hit wonder; she was nothing special" on this thread seem to have never listened to much of her music beyond a 30 second snippet her or there in the background of some artless ABC drama. She was more than that. She had real soul. But after awhile, it was overshadowed by all the stuff.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one substance legal and the other illegal?

Apropos to nothing, but this board would be a lot more fun if you started every post that way...
