Agreed - and it has kind of bothered me that Amy Winehouse was a huge success while someone like Sharon Jones is sort of on the fringe of the music business. Winehouse was, on some level, a copy of Jones, even using her back-up band for her album, but it's apparently much more marketable to be a white English girl who sounds like a black American woman than it is to be a black American woman who sounds like a black American woman.

None of that is really a reflection on Winehouse, who I think was quite talented.

in an attempt to get back on track to the news that brought us to this discussion, amy's passing leaves me with an underwhelming ambivalence. simple as that. her fans, or those of you who have a bigger heart than i do, have been moved by it.

just hope we can all still be friends... :)

shockey, I wasn't even thinking about you when I posted. In hindsight, some of your phrasing triggered memories of things others have said to me or in my presence over the years, including on this board years ago. I was not speaking directly about you.

You do seem to have your hands full on this thread. I've said all I will say except: I stand by my comments and add a RIP to Amy Winehouse.

Yeah ... life as a talented, young, attractive, rich person is so horrible. Give me the life of a starving refugee in the Sudan any day.

Journalists and society in general seem to give more of a crap about the "insignificant" problems of the spoiled rather than deal with real issues. Amy Winehouse's death is the top trending topic today, unlike that "non-news" event that happened in some European place yesterday.

That's because, relatively speaking, the death of Amy Winehouse is easy to comprehend, debate and digest.

Exactly - what is there to tweet about Norway after "Holy fucking shit"? There's not much to say about Norway in 140 characters.

There's plenty to say about Amy Winehouse, ranging from a basic RIP to the Church Lady "Superior Dance" that some of our esteemed posters broke out today.

And the fact that Amy Winehouse happened today and Norway 24+ hours ago mean it's not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison.
