The Browns cancelled their plan to have some sort of observance at the Modell family's request. Probably the best move all the way around.

It was never THEIR plan. It was the NFL's plan. Browns execs aren't THAT stupid.

Also, this tidbit from a story in Verse's J-Topics thread kind of blows up all the "Cleveland wouldn't take care of Art Modell" stuff, to me.

Didn't know about that vote. Interesting.

The state of Ohio would have to mobilize the National Guard and occupy Canton on the day of the enshrinement ceremony if he was ever inducted into the Hall.

if the HOF was in Duluth or Decatur he might already be in but he's never going in as long as its in Canton.

I am looking at what Tex and Art did for the league, not so much for their organizations.
    Bigger picture.

For all of the stuff I've read here and what I know on my own, Art Modell should never be in the Pro Football HOF anyway.

And why again exactly is Ralph Wilson in the Hall of Fame?
One more thing about Modell - people forget took over Municipal Stadium when the city was broke.
There was thought to be a threat at the time of losing the Indians to New Orleans.
Then the Indians get Jacobs Field so their rent - 81 home dates - goes out the window.
This is where a lot of the hucksterism was born (monster truck shows, concert series, carnival dates).
He was losing the money the Indians would have been providing and scrambling to make up for it.

During the Chefs (great googily-moogily)-Falcons game, Brian Billick and Tom Brenneman(?) spent a few moments praising Modell.

    Summarizing Billick:
Modell would make any conversation about you, even though he was ridiculously rich and a genius owner. A real people person.
Also, he should be remembered for his greatness, even in Cleveland, because he left behind the name and the colors. A very gracious man.

There's that lie again, about the colors and history.
Fitting that a complete lie should be mimicked in remarks on Modell.
