RIP Bobby Knight

I've never made a secret of respecting the work of my former colleague. And I think he walks the fine line brilliantly here. Because once again ... not everything in life is black and white.

Freshman year when I walked on, I pasted a Knight quote over my desk, to help inspire me. Right next to the one that said, "Goal: Weigh 130 next year."

It guess it worked, because I kicked an extra point in the spring game.

 

There were a few I didn't post, which had no Knight presence on the front (even in a teaser or skybox), which I figured was a result of news breaking too late for the run or they're papers that do a knee-jerk local front no matter what. That or they don't have AP.

And Bruce Parkhill was a class act.

 

Bruce Parkhill was the best man for the job in the entirety of modern PSU basketball.

 

On the day Jim Valvano died, I called Parkhill up for his reaction. He was who he was ... straight-forward, insightful and respectful.
With all the college basketball jerks I've dealt with over the years, never have forgotten Parkhill was the opposite.

That's like calling water wet.

 

Knowing what I know of Indiana's media scene, Knight's death (6:15 p.m.) would have severely tested, if not broken, the press schedule for some pretty big papers around the state. Certainly for many of the sports sections.

It's a stop-the-presses moment if there ever was one, but who knows whether anyone has the power to make that call anymore?

 

That was very nice of the NCAA to name the line after an Atlanta Hawks center.

 

Knight's health has not been good for some time. Every Indiana outlet of any size which purports to covey IU should have had something in the can.
