Apparently, you don't know any Alabama fans, because if you did, you would know just how blatantly false the above statement is.

Everybody's out to get Alabama. They're all jealous of the proud tradition that includes 87 national championships. Even the refs.

Ah, I see you're counting the ones where Boy's Life honored the Tide as champs. Fair enough.

True story: Did you know that in last year's media guide, the school actually stopped claiming one nat'l title and claimed another instead? Seriously. I can't recall off the top of my head (damned memory) which ones they swapped, but they just stopped claiming one and picked up one they thought they should claim instead.

My memory is a little faulty, but when SC and Arkansas got admitted into the SEC, didn't Alabama throw a fit?
It seems like one of the schools claimed a national title that Alabama also claimed and 'Bama didn't want the SEC office to recognize the other school's title claim.
Turned into a big ol' pissing match.

That'd probably be the one Arkansas claims for 1964. I think it was for finishing No. 1 in the Pine Bluff Weekly Shopper Top 25.

I think maybe they substituted 1941 for 1945, although I can't verify since my wife has successfully rid the house of all my decade-old game cups. '41 is the shakiest claim to a title, but I don't see why the others offend anyone. It's not like there was always an AP/UPI poll to settle things back in the day.

I've never really give much of a shit. Some of the titles -- the ones where they were beaten in the bowl game by a team with a better record -- are kinda sketchy. I think there are three, maybe four like that. But again, who cares? They wanna claim 40, best to 'em.

Did find all the finger pointing at Auburn, which accepted some shady ass trophy after the 04 season, a little ironic, though.

In 64, they were AP and UPI champions before losing the Orange Bowl to Texas. Both polls selected champions prior to the bowl games (as did UPI in 73, prior to losing the Sugar Bowl to Notre Dame.) Other schools have legitimately claimed championships under similar circumstances. None of that suddenly makes the Eufaula Tribune a respected football oracle.

I was there, too. On about the 35 on that side and end of the field. Possibly the best football game I've ever witnessed. I felt so sorry for Contant. Helluva linebacker.

I'm just saying ... being undefeated and claiming a sketchy title is, at least to me, about equal to claiming one where your team lost to a team with a better record to end the year.

That's all. If they both wanna claim 'em, I'm fine with that. If they both don't wanna claim 'em, I'm fine with that, too.

    Thanks!
I remember two things about that game
One was the sterling quality of the broadcast.
And I remember UK lost and I was pissed because someone I wanted to lose won. Now that you mentioned the team, I know it was Nick Satan

Is it just me or is Bobby Gaston's retirement and the introduction of instant replay this season just a bit on the convenient side?
