I should like the ZBB - but I just find their songs lacking, overly obvious, sentimental and pandering.

You don’t like your chicken fried and cold beer on a Friday night? Are you a commie?

Oh - I absolutely LOATHE the line

"I thank God for my life
And for the stars and stripes
May freedom forever fly, let it ring
    Salute the ones who died
The ones that give their lives
So we don't have to sacrifice
    All the things we love"

(and using the snare drum roll at the end? My goodness.)

So Jim Bob took an RPG to the chest so you could have fried chicken and drink beer on a Friday night? Ugh. Yeah, I don't know if that song started the country music panderfest, but I'll give a country song a listen and if it hits three cliche's before the chorus - I am out. Pickup trucks, beer, jeans, listening to the radio, punchin' the clock, dirt roads, river, the flag, God, freedom etc. etc.

All I know is Steve Goodman wrote the perfect country/western song.

I'd be drunk, too, the day my mom got out of prison.

He also wrote the perfect train song. Such an underappreciated artist.

Goodman and Prine, who took a Wurlitzer in lieu of royalties.
