    Like the guy on PBS who only used tools from the 19th century. We had an historic village in my hometown and watching guys use those 200-year old tools was satisfying.

    That's how they used to make cedar shakes to put on a roof. There's a foot pedal you use to clamp the wood in place, then you smooth the split cedar blank with the draw knife.
