I was listening to the service in DC on NPR this morning and trying to figure out who was eulogizing him. To find out at the end it was Ford's KID, reading the eulogy Ford had written for Carter but didn't live to give himself was just so poignant. One, I didn't realize Carter and Ford became close. Second, I thought about Ford's son, and Mondale's son (who also read Walter's eulogy for Carter), and the various writers of Carter's obits who had passed before they ran - and thought how incredible it must be for those families, who for one last time, were able to hear or read the words of their departed loved ones. One final act of service to this nation. I was moved.
A couple years back a relative came across an oral history my grandma did about politics in California - she was a noted political journo in the state - and it was so amazing to see and hear her talk about her life and experiences one more time. I wish everyone could have something like that.
