Brent Musberger just told a story about how he once asked Paterno when he would retire and Paterno told him that he didn't want to retire because of Bear Bryant. Said he didn't have any other hobbies and he was worried that if and when he retired, he wouldn't last long afterward.

I wouldn't be surprised if the team or insiders got an email yesterday that said he's not going to recover, or even that JoePa was brain dead and was on the respirator until people could say goodbye -- particularly since football players were tweeting RIPs yesterday. I'd love to read the tick-tock on events from Saturday at some point.

Yesterday, they said he was taken off the respirator yesterday morning. So from there, it was just a waiting game. Not sure it's a "tick-tock" kind of thing to read.

RIP to a great football coach who tried to be a great man, but came up short in a great test.

    This is a journalism site.

We are going to discuss how news is covered.

If that offends your delicate sensibilities, then tough.

It's not a matter of delicate sensibilities, Dick. It's a matter of having some modicum of class.

Having lost a couple of loved ones following the removal of the respirator, I can understand the misinformation and confusion over this story. Not okay from a journalistic standpoint, but I understand how it happened.

It can take a few minutes or many hours, but the end of the respirator means the end of life. I have to believe someone heard he was being removed from life support, and assumed that meant immediate death. Terrible mistake, but if you have been through it, you can see how it happened.

RIP to a legend. So very sad for his family.

I was referring to how the information got out -- something that probably would be fascinating reading here, or on Poynter or Romenesko, but not neccessarily a general news site. Unless someone has discovered how the student site got its information in the first place and I missed it entirely?
