I get much better gas mileage than my car's EPA rating. Not sure if I can go faster than it can go, however. Maybe with a wind at my back?

Sometimes, a boat has to reach down and give 110 percent.

I'm sure they're upping the figure as we speak.

Next to the senseless loss of life, this is what infuriates me most about these type of stories. Young athlete dies tragic death, is built up beyond all reasonable expectations, then the facts come out, skewing all the hype. And it happens every time.

Yeah, redlining the engine. You can do it, but don't expect your engine to survive very long.

LeBatard just made a great point: He's getting a statue for getting fucked up and causing three deaths. He'd likely be in jail if he survived.

Very good point. If it had just been him in the boat, I could possibly reason my way into honoring him like that. Stupid youth, tragic ending, reminder of life's frailty, etc. But with two other people involved, there's no way I can get there. It completely disregards the families of the other two.

The statue should have a plaque that explains his death and mentions the other men. I'm fine with recognizing him as a ballplayer, at a ballpark, but it's also a very strong teachable moment. And I usually loathe that phrase, but over the next several years parents should say to their kids, "we should be seeing him pitch today; read why we aren't."

Dying is almost always a good business decision.

He pitched there for four years and won a grand total of 38 games. He died a selfish death that destroyed other families as well.

    That's your franchise hero?
