I used to have the same thoughts, but it seems really common for aircraft to be really old. Or to seem really old in comparison to cars. I'd be curious to know the % of private aircraft that were built in the 1990s. Or earlier.

Maybe I should've been more clear. I didn't mean to make it a straw man about one family. Of course my heart aches for every family. Don't suggest it doesn't, please. That's not fair.

It is gut-wrenching. But it's not surprising that they're not being talked about much.

If Michael and Jeff Jordan and my son and I died in the same plane crash, I'm not really going to be upset that no one talked about me or my son much.

I’m a little puzzled that, on a message board occupied by sports journalists and those who at least hold some interest in sports journalism, some don’t understand why people are more affected by the tragic death of one of sport’s superstars and his daughter.

The news is bigger because we made Kobe bigger. In ways tiny and a bit more involved, sports sections fed and fed on his fame. We wrote the stories, took the pictures, created the layouts or telecasts that would reach and move the audience to interest or emotion.

We helped to make him appear somewhat larger than life. That is sometimes what we do and I’m not sure if I’m convinced that’s inherently bad. Perhaps it’s just part of the sports world.

Yes, people care more about a sports giant than some ordinary guy or gal. We helped create that world.

If it is any consolation, I'd be a lot more upset about you. No offense to Jordan

Whew. Lotta people fighting to be the angriest voice of righteousness on this thread.

    Good luck with that.

I was once on the same flight as Jared from Subway. It occurred to me that if anything happened, the headline about my death would be "Sandwich Pitchman, 288 Others Killed in Crash."

So clarify it. Who are these "they" that you think revere Bryant because he got away with what they all do?

Are you proud of the eight seconds it took for you to complete your part in making her?

    And coach her.

And then put her in harm's way by creating a basketball academy 90 miles from home, then put her in an ancient tin bird and fly under such dangerous conditions, the LAPD choppers were grounded.
