I remember the one with George Burns, a couple years after "Oh, God!", where he came into the diner, and Vera actually thought he was God.

The Jerry Reed ones (there were at least a couple) were very enjoyable as I remember.

Looks like One Day at a Time was a year sooner.

Diahann Carroll had a show in the 60s where she played a single mom.

One of the few episodes of Alice I remember was where some Saudi (?) prince gave one of the waitresses a diamond ring and Mel cut a circle with it in his front door.

We who were kids for Archie Bunker, Maude Findlay, George Jefferson and Mary Richards were kinda aged-out of appointment TV by the time "Alice" came along, though. Nice gigs for Lavin and all involved, but their show and many others, though often hilarious in some scenes, didn't ever really blow the roof off in any season like Archie Bunker did every week, five times a show.

I had hoped "Alice" and others could rise higher or get funnier, but all those
incredible shows that broke through earlier were tough to beat, or even match.

Nice showcase reward for Lavin, though. She was always likable in her many roles.
But "Kiss My Grits!" got old almost as fast as J.J.'s constant "Kid Dyn-O-Mite!" shitfest.

Here's a J.J. Evans bomb as a late holiday gift, though. ... Good times, amirite!?!!

"Watcha Talkin 'Bout Willis" a little later is in the same area code.

I had not thought of Jimmie Walker in years. And then tonight after the Bengals game he was on an ad for the semi-legal local slots parlor. The years have not been kind.

What was the first catchphrase - Heyyyyyyy!!! ?

They tried to shoehorn those stupid catchphrases so many times. Richie Cunningham had "I found my thrill..." ChaChi had "Waa Waa Waa" or something like that. Did Laverne have one?

Alice was one of those classic "bridge shows" that carry audiences from the end of the 8 p.m. lead-off to the 9 p.m. slot. Or from 9 p.m. to a 10 p.m. drama.

Well, he was in the Player With Yourself Club. So that helped.

Flash the card and you'll get the kind of perks reserved for players only! Like free Kleenex. We're talking 2-ply, baby! Custom-made squeak free beds and extra large Do Not Disturb signs.

Ah bullshit. It's there. I watched it.
